Si fuera un concurso de fotografía estaríamos en problemas, pues en estos eventos, si bien se permite mejorar digitalmente la foto, no se “vale” agregar elementos que no estaban presentes a la hora del “flash”. Pero… como la vida no es un concurso sino un viaje, por no decir con Calderón de la Barca que es más bien un sueño, nos permitiremos entonces jugar y rotar la imagen. Le añadiremos una barca (¡que casualidad!), con un remero que boga ahora entre nubes, a través de un mar de algodón y fuego. Cuestión de puntos de vista. Cuestión de dejarnos soñar…

Would the shot be intended for a photo contest, we would be in trouble: even though digital enhancement is valid, no additional elements insertion is permitted in these kind of events. But it is not, thus, let us dream. The photo was rotated 180 degrees, and the bpat digitally added. What else to say? I guess we could just add the simple & beautiful wisdom of a song that, to unaware ears, seems to be just a lullaby. It is about 200 years old. And it goes like this: “Row, row, row your boat / Gently Down the stream / Merrily, merrily, merrily. / Life is but a dream…”

ESPAÑOL (ENGLISH TEXT BELOW): tomé esta fotografía, de la cual les comparto abajo dos versiones adicionales editadas digitalmente, durante un reciente “escape” a uno de los tantos y tantos fantásticos lugares a visitar en mi país. Las impresionantes dimensiones del árbol, la planta que lo acompaña en su caminata al cielo, la jungla como telón de fondo… todo me hizo pensar, evocándome una especie de iglesia, de catedral verde para un tipo más natural de culto… uno mucho pero mucho más antiguo, sabio y profundo que cualquiera seguido por nuestra especie.

ENGLISH: this photo, for which I share two additional digitally-edited versions, was shot during a recent “escape” to one of the utterly fantastic spots to visit in my homeland. The sheer, massive size of the tree, the plants that partner with it in the journey to the skies, the entire jungle context… all of it made me think, wondering about some sort of a church, of a green cathedral for a more natural type of cult… one that is much, much more ancient & wise than any followed by us as a species.

Esta poderosa imagen capturó mi lente hace unos días. El ruinoso camión en medio del seco paisaje me llevó a pensar en causa y efecto. Ideas tales como el cambio climático y nuestro terrible papel como especie para la Tierra me atravesaron dolorosamente las sienes.
Jugué luego con filtros digitales, para así incrementar la potencia del mensaje. Miren las otras versiones abajo.
En resumen: atención, humanos, cuidemos nuestro planeta. De lo contrario…

This powerful image captured my eye and lens some days ago. The wrecked truck within the dry vegetation inspired me cause & effect thoughts. Ideas around climate change and our terrible performance as a species and as “Earth Administrators” painfully crossed my head.
I later played with digital filters in order to increase the power of the message. Check the other versions below.
In summary, attention, humans… lets take good care of our planet. Else…

ESPAÑOL: Casi lo puedes tocar. Las hojas muestran un aura mágica, un halo blanco. Casi puedes sentir su respiración. Casi podemos ver la luz convirtiéndose en savia y verdor. Una foto que sintetiza la respiración… y una respiración hecha hoja: ¡Hágase la luz! Y la luz se hizo… vida.
ENGLISH: You can almost touch it. The leaves show a white halo a magical gleam around them. You can almost feel its sigh. You can almost see the light becoming the blocks of life. A photo that is a synthesis… and a synthesis made breath: Let there be (green) light! And there was… life.

ESPAÑOL (ENGLISH BELOW): la hermosísima película “La Sociedad de los Poetas Muertos” (¡estrenada hace ya 30 años!) difundió el tremendo poder de los versos de Walt Whitman, autor de “Hojas de Hierba”, una de las joyas de la poesía norteamericana y universal. Estas fotos, las cuales tomé en mi propio barrio, aspiran a transmitir un poco de esa magia que transpira el poeta en sus eternos versos.
Comparto abajo material complementario para “refrescar” la película y la obra del inmortal Whitman. Por favor – te lo ruego – solo mira ese pequeño video…
El mundo entero reflejado en unas sencillas briznas de hierba… ¡yo te saludo, hermano, hermana, que nuestros versos sean sonoros!

ENGLISH (ESPAÑOL ARRIBA): the gorgeous movie “Dead Poets Society” (a 1989 hit: 30 years ago!) shared the power of Walt Whitman´s poetry, author of “Leaves of Grass”, one of the greatest american poetry works. These pictures, which I shot in my very neighborhood, intend to transmit a piece of the magic captured by those verses.
I am sharing below additional material on the movie and Whitman and his works. I beg you: just watch that 1 min video.

Tomé estas fotografías muy cerca de mi casa, durante una corta caminata veraniega. No fue nada planeado: simplemente uno de esos regalos gratuitos que brinda la vida. Como canta Pedro Guerra, “algo bueno que no pides y se da” (te comparto la canción al pie de este post). Unos días después, un truco del inconsciente me llevo a asociar la foto con la inmortal obra de Van Gogh “Almendros en Flor“, mostrada a su vez más abajo. Me recordó también al estilizado arte japonés cuando retrata árboles floridos, particularmente los cerezos (conocido como sakura).
Pero, más allá de la reminiscencia puramente artística o cultural, me transmite una inmensa armonía. La mezcla de colores cálidos, las maderas y los azules está perfectamente balanceada. La composición es sobria. Estas imagenes brindan paz. Serenidad. Casi sin querer se dibuja en el rostro una sonrisa. Citando de nuevo al mencionado cantautor español: “cielo limpio, cielo azul / como todo si estás tu…“.
Es hermoso vivir.

ENGLISH VERSION / VERSION EN ESPAÑOL MÁS ARRIBA
I took these shots quite close to my home, during a short summer walk. Some days after the impromptu session – which was nothing but one of those wonderful gifts that life freely gives us – I noticed the resemblance to Van Gogh´s blossom series, particularly the “Almond Blossoms” famous painting, shown above. It also reminded me of the stylized japanese art when portraying blossoming trees, particularly cherry tree depictions (known as sakura).
Still, and beyond cultural & artistic references, the image transmits intense harmony. The color mix, including the warm tones, the wooden ones and the blue palette has a perfect balance. The composition is sober. These shots convey peace. Serenity. Almost without noticing, a smile appears in your face.
It is good to be alive.
